Schedule of EventsWednesday Evening:

Activity DescriptionsPoster Session for Undergraduates:Following the poster session on Wednesday, all of the student posters will be displayed in another room for the remainder of the conference. An extended display of student posters enables undergraduate students to more thoroughly view the work of their peers. These will not be on display the entire conference in one space, but returned to this space after each is presented in normal sessions. Additionally, this will allow students to obtain more information about the types of research opportunities that are available for undergraduate students. Capture the Flask:This game has the same rules as capture the flag, except it will be played with plastic glow-in-the-dark Erlenmeyer flasks instead of flags. If the weather permits the game will be played outdoors; however, if the weather is not accommodating then a suitable indoor location will be used. The members from all the student affiliate chapters will be divided into two groups. Each group will have an area of the park or gymnasium that is their territory. Also, each group will have a flask, which they will hide somewhere in their territory. In order to win the game, one team must capture the opposing team’s flask and bring it back to his/her team’s territory, without getting tagged by an opposing team member. Thursday Morning Activities:Thursday morning is going to be devoted to outreach activities with the local high school students. We are hoping to get other student affiliate chapters involved with different aspects of this program. Chemistry History:Several posters will be on display about choice chemistry subjects with historical significance. It will be given in an informal poster session held for the high school students. Posters will include information about the topic and any historical information including when the discovery was made, who it was made by, etc. Tie-Dye:Our chapter, along with Truman’s Alpha Chi Sigma chapter will put on a Tie-dye. An explanation of why different chemicals are used and how they work to create the shirts will be given. Cost for the high school students to tie-dye will be covered, undergraduates can tie-dye shirts for approximately $5. Green Chemistry Over Lunch:Thursday’s lunch break will be from noon until 2:00. We will be supplying pizza for undergraduates in attendance. Lunch will be followed by a presentation about green chemistry given by Dr. Mary Kirchhoff from the National Education Division. Graduate Student Roundtable Discussion:Graduate students will form a panel to talk about what their experience has been so far in grad school, and to answer student’s questions. All undergraduate students will be invited to attend and ask questions. "Demo Dude"The main program Thursday evening will be a chemical demonstration by a cleverly dubbed “Demo Dude”. The demonstrator has been confirmed to be Dr. Shakhashiri. There will be a raffle for several of his demo books (see http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu). Undergraduate Speaker and Award SessionThere will be a short ceremony awarding undergraduates present at the conference. Awards will tentatively include but not be limited to: best historical rendition at the history fair, best demonstration, best school representation overall, best undergraduate posters, and capture the flask winners.
